Mourning dress, 2025

Vintage fabric, yarn

I used to spend weekends at my grandparents’ house. Each time, I would bring my dolls and beg my grandma to help my sister and me make new outfits for them. We would bring out her light blue sewing machine and her big bag of scrap fabric, and together we sewed shawls, skirts, and dresses. They all had frayed edges and uneven hems, but we loved every second spent behind the machine with grandma.

This dress was made using the same blue sewing machine I inherited from her after she passed away this past summer, along with fabric I collected over years of spending nights at her house. This project is a homage to my grandma and everything she taught me.
