Monarchs, 2025

Gouache on mat board, 24 x 14 inches (60.96 x 35.56 cm)

Monarchs make appearances in multiple images in my portfolio. This piece depicts what I remember to be the backyard of the house I grew up in. My mother, sister and I would raise monarch butterflies during the summer, and there was always a patch of milkweed and swarms of monarchs fluttering around the house.

In this same yard, my siblings and I would run our imaginations wild. The yard was magical—shown here through the surreal pink sky and abstracted trees.
